Default What gear should I use for burnouts?

I have been leaving the car in 'd' until I see smoke in third gear and then I release the line lock and spin to the line. Is this correct? I have 2004-R with 3.42 gears and 255-60/15 MT ET Street drag radials.

I won't say it isn't correct, I will tell you how I do it. I start off in 1st gear, get em spinning bringing the RPM up easy, shift to 2nd gear, get spinning faster, get a little smoke, release the line lock, ease off the gas pedal so as to roll out of the burnout. I use M/T slicks that don't require a big, smokey burn out. When I roll out, I listen and feel for the little bite sound of the tires stickin to the pavement, kinda like a chirp and I know my tires are ready. Air pressure is also as important as anything. Check your tires after a burnout and look for the full width of the contact surface to show contact. A thermal heat gun is nice to get temp readings across the surface, from side to side.. you want them uniform..

Hope that helps,
