Front tires
OK, OK, I know I killed you on the phone today... As I was looking over the car on the lift I noticed the front tires are pretty dry rotted and they need to be replaced. They are Dunlop 165 15 86s sp20 A/S metric's. Now I did a little homework and they are rated to 114 mph...Yikes! Now if I have 28x 10.5 15's in the rear, should I be putting say a 27 x 4.5 M/T's ET Front up front? I think the 165 15 tire was @ 25.4" tall. Should the front tire be close to the height of the rear tire for drag race purposes?

Mike, I've been using some P215-75-15 radials in front for a long time with some rear slicks about the same size you have (Phoenix 10.5 x 28.5).

You would drop about 28lbs off the front end buy switching to the M/T ET front's (@ 13 lbs). Then the narrower rims you would need to fit those tires would lighten it up even more! I know, all it takes is money And I'm not sure you want that route because you still do a fair amount of street/highway driving, right?

All I can say is ..... get rid of the car tires.. definitely purchase the race tires up front. Car tires with 100mph speed ratings are dangerous. Also, street tires will carry the water out of the water box...

Mike, don't forget that a larger diameter tire will increase ''roll-out'', enabling you to cut better lights than smaller diameter ones as it take them more time to leave the staging beam...Does that make sense too? That was an popular trick back my NHRA Super Stock years...
