New GN....finally

New to the site and have been looking for a GN since I got rid of my Cobra last February. Just picked it up Wednesday(87) and its been sitting for a bit. Price was right, and needs some TLC. Doesn't like to stay running when cold, smooths out a bit once its warm. If I can't figure it out, i'm 3 miles from Jack, so that makes me feel good:)

Your very lucky! Don't forget to swing by the Dunkin Donuts and pick him up a cup of coffee (and some sweets). :D

To try and answer your question, remove and clean the IAC (idle air control) valve. It sits under the throttle blade at the front of the throttle body. There is a 4 prong plug which attaches to it. Some good carb cleaner should work fine. Report back after you do this. Do you have a scan tool?

whitecobra98 04-12-2008 11:30 PM

the scanmaster will be my first purchase. I believe the drivers header is cracked too. when it builds boost, the boost gauge quickly maxes out( i know they aren't terribly accurate) then I hear a fluttering sound fromthe drivers side. I drove it around today for the first time, so I was easy on it. i will try the IAC though. Thanks for the advice.

whitecobra98 04-13-2008 05:59 PM

Cleaned IAC this am. Was definitely caked with crap. Throttle body was nasty too. After I did that it started right up, not wanting to die out. Once I gave it some gas to see if it would break up, it stalled out on me. Driving it, it was still choppy and idles up and down. Thanks for the info though. Starts up much better now, just have to work on the rest. Also, the hoses going to the throttle body fromt he intercooler were covered in what looked like oil. Is this normal?

BrianHynes 04-13-2008 06:41 PM

The IAC may be bad/worn. you'll need a scan tool to verfy counts. Definitely check ALL your vacume hoses/connections for deterioration, cracks, and hardness. Also, if you car has a smaller than stock convertor ( and the tune hasn't been corrected ), it will cause a stall condition as you have described.

whitecobra98 04-14-2008 11:44 PM

Met "The Man" today and bought a scanmaster. I should have it hooked up soon, and get some readings so I can make sense of the shitty running. Talked with him for almost an hour, showed me his shop and what not. Great guy to talk to and what a personality......funny,funny dude. I'm lucky to live this close to him. Thanks Jack:)

whitecobra98 04-16-2008 12:20 AM

failed emissions miserably today. nox emissions were 2 high, but im not surprised. it has been sitting for almost 2 yrs. i guess i'd better hook up that scanmaster

Hey it's Michael, I was on the phone with Jack while you were there. NOx? Sounds like it could be a bad egr valve or heavy carbon build up, or both. That could also explain the stalling too.

p.s. Was my car really in the shop;):D

thanks, I have to find 5 minutes to hook up the scanmaster....hopefully that will solve the problem...and yes, your car was in the far right bay:) for real!!!!!!!!! hc grams were 1.66, limit was 2.00, co grams were 15.32, limit was 30.00, nox grams were 5.09, limit was 3.00

I think you may be right. Jack stopped by on his way home, and the egr seems like its at least one of my problems. Idle didnt change much when he blocked the bottom. Scanmaster hookup scheduled for saturday.

I know! My first thought also was the IAC also, you beat me to it, and when he said he failed for NOx that was the ringer.

I hope that solves the problem for you. I hate it when there is gremlins in these cars! Is it mostly stock? What kind of mods does it have?

whitecobra98 04-17-2008 11:18 AM

As far as I can see, its stock,stock,stock...its got a K&N and thats about it..Jack told me to pop the kick panel to see if its the stock chip or not...i'll be doing that saturday along with a fuel filter, pcv, etc....i pulled the plugs last night and they looked fine

whitecobra98 04-20-2008 02:26 AM

update..still havent checked the ecm for the chip in it, but I did go through the car today..................ALL DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! changed the oil, dropped the trans pan and replaced filter, replaced front pads with ceramics (a la Jack), replaced the rear shoes (once again a la Jack), flushed coolant, replaced fuel filter (found pinhole leak squirting fuel onto muffler :o) greased everything I could, new pcv valve and check valve (a la Jack) spark plugs, cleaned MAF, and HOOKED UP SCAN MASTER....unfortunately waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too tired to grab a pad and write down numbers...i will have them tomorrow for the smart ones to decipher.....found out the previous owner really took care of this car....unfortunately I think the rear end has had the radish.....:( the noise back there sounds like it could be fatal...oh well, the car was still a steal.....time for sleepy now

whitecobra98 04-20-2008 10:34 PM

ok here are the numbers at idle
o2 - 613
af - 05-06
l8 - 34
bat - 13.2
int - 134
bl - 138
clt - 217
ats - 128
r - 900-925
tps - .48
iac - 00
cc - 185-243
mal - 00

i got on it and I saw 14.1 on the retard degrees side and the boost gauge (in dash) almost maxed out... hope someone can help with these numbers....i think I have it narrowed down to the fuel pressure regulator or the egr....idle seems to stay high and hunts up and down

BrianHynes 04-20-2008 10:58 PM

Did you take these readings fully warmed up? Was the tranny in park or drive? Your IAC appears inoperative. It should give you a count of 15-20 at idle in park, and jump to 30-50 at idle in gear. These readings are with the motor a full operating temperature. Atleast this has been my experience.

BrianHynes 04-20-2008 11:00 PM

Also, your O2 counts should be active ( ie. constantly changing ). If not, you have a dead O2 sensor.

Sorry I did not clarify my statemant. "In gear" readings are still at idle with your foot on the brake--not driving. Check the readings and post back.

Your TPS is a bit high. I would adjust to.42-.45. Also your IAC counts are low. That 11 would be acceptable in park, but in gear it should move up to 30-50.

seeing as I've already cleaned it, should I replace IAC?

No, you need to adjust it. When you do it will move your TPS #'s, which is OK because they need to be adjusted anyway.

You adjust the IAC by turning the minimum idle screw on the side of the throttle linkage. If you turn the screw in it opens the throttle plate the IAC counts go down. If you turn the screw out, the throttle blade closes and the IAC counts go higher. After you achieve your acceptable IAC count, adjust your TPS to .42-.46 minimum and 4.80-4.95 max. If you swing by the shop or if I see you out on the way home.... I'll show you.. damn you are lucky .....:D

Stop kissing up! I can't stand any more. ( Just kidding ). Anyhow, you are very fortunate to have Jack at your service, and being how he has things under control, I'm signing off.
